Set's Telephony Q&A
1. When I run Dialer, I receive the message "Error in Windows' telephony, or
in the file telephony.ini".
2. I'm not sure what TAPI is, or if my modem is TAPI
compatible.
3. How can I replace area codes automatically?
4. How can I set up
10-digit dialing?
5. Dialer is answering my incoming calls, but I don't want it
to.
6. How can I test my custom
DeskTop Set-by-Phone settings?
7. What type of modems are
compatible with DeskTop Set?
8. What paging software do I need
to send pages from DeskTop Set?
1. When I run Dialer, I receive the message "Error in
Windows' telephony, or in the file telephony.ini"
If you find that you are not able to run Dialer without receiving one of the
above messages, or a message similar to these, it may help to reset your Windows
telephony settings:
1. Locate
and install the Unimodem/v drivers that ship with your modem.
2. Make sure that
you have a Telephony Control Panel. If you do not, search your system for the
file telephon.cp$ (it should appear in \windows\system) and rename it to
telephon.cpl.
3. Delete the file named telephon.ini from the windows directory
(if it appears).
4. Restart the computer.
5. Open Control Panels.
6. Open the
Telephony Control Panel.
7. Under Telephony drivers, click Add... Add "Unimodem
Service provider", then click Setup to make sure that your modem is properly
selected.
8. Click the Properties button; you should see the following tabs:
General, Connection, Distinctive Ring, and Forwarding. If you only have the
General and Connection tabs, your modem is not Unimodem/V compatible, and your
dialing and answering functionality will be limited.
9. Click OK or Close
continually until you have exited this Control Panel.
10. Restart the computer.
11. Locate the file dialer.cfg in your \dts\data directory, and rename it to
dialer.old.
12. Start Dialer and select File/Dialing setup from the menu.
13.
Click on the General tab and check your area code, and dialing prefixes. 14.
Click on the Dialing Devices tab and make sure the correct modem is selected.
You should now be able to place calls properly.
2. I'm not sure what TAPI is, or if my modem is TAPI compatible.
TAPI stands for "Telephone Application Programming Interface". TAPI is
Windows' way of "talking" to high-end modems.
DeskTop Set's new Dialer is TAPI compliant. It uses standard Microsoft
drivers, called Unimodem/V, to access the advanced features of voice modems.
Please review the following notes for further information:
PLEASE NOTE that in order to access advanced functions, such as CallerID or
hands-free speakerphone dialing, your modem needs to be Unimodem/V compliant.
Not all voice modems are UniModem/V compliant - if there is any doubt, please
consult your modem User Guide, or the manufacturer's web site. You will know the
modem is properly configured when you get a dialtone after clicking the SPKR
button on the dialer.
If you have loaded the Unimodem/V drivers, and have verified that your modem
is Unimodem/V compliant, but still cannot use the hands-free speakerphone,
please check the following:
Make sure your soundcard, modem, speakers, and microphone are all connected
properly. Some voice modems have a short "jumper" cable that connects the
Speaker jack on the modem to the Line In jack on the soundboard, so that sound
can travel through the phone, into the modem, into the soundboard, and out your
speakers (and vice versa). * Make sure that the volume levels for your devices
are set properly. You can go directly to the various Windows sound settings by
choosing File/Windows Settings… from the Dialer's menu. make sure that these
volume levels are set to reasonable levels.
Please note: Windows 2000, XP, and Vista no
longer support DeskTop Set's TAPI functions.
Because of this, the Answer Bar and Voice functions will not function under
these versions of Windows. You will, however, be able to place outgoing calls, and lift the phone
receiver once the call is connected.
Determining whether your modem supports Unimodem/V
If you have any doubt about whether your modem is Unimodem/V compliant,
please consult your modem User Guide, or the manufacturer's web site. DeskTop Set's
User Guide contains more information on the TAPI dialer's operation.
3. How can I replace area codes automatically?
If your telephone company adds a new area code to your area, you may be faced
with changing some of your Address Book numbers to this new area code. DeskTop
Set provides you with a way to do this quickly and easily:
1. Get a list of the exchanges whose area code will change.
Your phone company usually provides you with this list when they inform you
about the new area code.
2. In Address Book, choose File/Utilities/Replace
Area Codes from the menu. Using this screen, you can specify, for
example, that all 201 area codes with a 909 exchange be changed to the
new area code, 973.
3. Continue this process until each of the affected
exchanges is changed to the new area code.
4.
Once this is done, your address book records will all have an accurate area
code.

4. How can I set up 10-digit dialing?
Your telephone company may require you to dial the new area code (and even
parts of the old area code) using 10-digit dialing. This means that to make a
call, you would pick up the phone and dial the area code, plus the 7-digit
number (just like dialing a long distance number, but without the "1").
DeskTop Set will allow you to create a new dialing format, and assign the
appropriate phone numbers to be dialed with this new format:
1. In Dialer, choose File/Dialing Setup from the menu, then click the Formats
tab.
2. Scroll down the list of formats until you come to Custom Format #1.
3.
Under Name, change this format's name to 10-digit, or something else you'll
remember.
4. In the bottom line, edit the dialing template so that it reads
<PBX><TEL>. You can insert the appropriate merge fields by double-clicking the
name of the field in the upper left list.
5. Click OK to save your changes.
The next step is to select the new dialing format for each area code and
exchange to be dialed using the 10-digit dialing format:
1. In Dialer, choose File/Dialing Setup from the menu, then click the Call
Routing tab.
2. Click the Add… button in the Alternative Prefixes list.
3. Enter
the area code and either a single exchange, or a range of exchanges, which need
to be dialed using 10-digit dialing.
4. Click the Alternative format list and
select the 10-digit dialing format you created above.
5. Dialer is answering my incoming
calls, but I don't want it to.
Dialer's Answer Bar can automatically answer your phone, and manage your
incoming calls according to your preferences.
If you do not want Answer Bar to answer your incoming calls, click the Auto
button on the Dialer, so that its light is no longer lit. Dialer will ignore all
your incoming calls.
To turn auto-answer back on, click the Auto button, so that its light is lit.
Answer Bar will then answer your incoming calls according to the settings you
have specified.
6. How can I test my custom DeskTop Set-by-Phone
settings?
DeskTop Set-by-phone allows you to customize the menu that you hear when you
access your messages, address book, and calendar using a touch-tone phone. You
can also password your system, and select which books and calendars are
accessible by phone.
Once you have set these options, you can test DeskTop Set Set-by-Phone by
calling into your PC. When Answer Bar answers the call, press the # key on your
touch tone phone, and then enter your password. You will then be greeted with
your menu of choices.
Of course, you will not be able to dial into Answer Bar if you have a single
telephone line in your home or office. Instead, you can run Dialer, and choose
File/Emulate remote access from the menu. You will be greeted with the same menu
as if you had dialed in, and you will then be able to test your password and
custom settings.
7. What type of modems are
compatible with DeskTop Set?
In order to work with DeskTop Set, a modem must be Unimodem/V compatible.
Unimodem/v is Microsoft's standard driver for voice modems. While Unimodem/V
compatibility is not normally listed on the modem’s packaging, if the modem is
listed as having a Rockwell chip, and being voice capable, it is likely to be
Unimodem/V compatible. However, the only way to be certain is to contact the
manufacturer directly.
We have tested the following Unimodem/V compatible modems, and recommend them
as being reliable, economical, and compatible with DeskTop Set. The modems are
listed in no particular order:
— Zoom Comstar Model 2800 SVD.
— Creative Labs’ PhoneBlaster 33.6 or 56k
models.
— USR 56k Voice Sportsters with CallerID.
As of this time, we are not aware of any PCMCIA modems that offer Unimodem/V
compatibility.
If you have another modem in mind, feel free to check with us,
and we'll be happy to tell you whether other clients have submitted any reports
on this modem.
8. What paging software do I need to send pages from DeskTop Set?
DeskTop Set can send a variety of information to your pager, such as
notification that you have new messages waiting, or calendar alarms, so you do
not miss important events.
To use DeskTop Set with alphanumeric pagers, you will need WinBeep or
Notify! software in order to deliver text messages to your pager.
Notify! software is published by AirMedia’s Notify! Group. They can be
contacted at 1-800-843-3883, or www.exmachina.com. DeskTop Set supports Notify! Classic 1.5.3.
WinBeep software is published by Integra Technologies. They can be contacted
at 1- 800-842-8395, www.integra.net. DeskTop Set integrates with WinBeep 4.1.
